now with added pictures!

if it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that talk is cheap, then it's probably time for some illustrations of the conference. let's start with the venue itself: none of the conference rooms have any natural light coming into them, which makes you appreciate having a hotel room that allows you to look out over such a magnificent vista:

today, after andy ramsden's twitter session (which was interesting, of which more later) i accidentally ended up in a technology/systems/standards session. i didn't understand a word of it, but lots of people seemed to be taking pictures of this slide, so i thought i'd share it with you instead of trying to summarise the session:

are we all clear about that?

the presenter also helpfully shared a couple of pictures/diagrams with us to clarify some of the concepts he was talking about - for those of you struggling to keep up, let's see if these help:

(the word obscured by the person's head is "environment", btw)

right, i'll leave you to digest that for a while - time for a spot of dinner and then some more sessions - hopefully not about metadata.

Now I've gone off at a tangent, bored with Brain Hurt, I've decided to autonomously pursue Brian Hurt and come up with two alternatives:

A point for anyone who can tell me who Brian De Palma is, because I can't be bothered to google him myself (I'm probably not allowed to give out points..)

or perhaps, a different angle again
[Brian this is your cue for a nice graphic picture of your toe]

oh my god, i've created a monster!

ok, i'm going to take a while to figure out the scoring here (and also to clear up the tea that i've just spilled everywhere) - all 3 of you get multiple points for being v clever *and* v funny. it's just that the astronomical number of points to be awarded is making my head swim.

smodge - you can give out points for the brian de palma question if you want, but i should point out that the first comment under the photo gives a pretty big clue! also, be careful - anyone posting photos of their feet, or found to be inciting the posting of feet photos, will automatically be disqualified.

right. after much (really really way too much) consideration, i've decided that crunching the numbers for bonus points here would just cause too much hurtiness in my head. i though about allocating points per number of pictures, per number of posts, and per number of key words represented per picture - but to do that rigorously would have taken literally tens of minutes of my time.

so, instead, because all three of you showed cleverness and showing-off-ness tendencies (not to mention competitiveness) i've decided to allocate 30 points between you, as indicated below. please note that the judges decision is final...possibly. i thought that all the contributions were hilarious, so there are unfortunately no bonus points for the laugh-o-meter in this round - but hope you agree that i've been quite generous regardless :)

helen - 7 points for enthusiasm, being first, and getting some tip top pictures in there. the metadata sticker picture deserves special commendation here, especially as it totally baked my noodle.

smodge - 10 points. whether it's inventiveness or bad typing (surely not!) the switch from 'brain hurt' to 'brian hurt' was inspired. please note, though, that as previously advised, any incitement to post feet-related pictures may get you into all sorts of trouble. but you're safe for now (phew).

louise - 13 points. the sometaithurts collection is brilliant, but mainly i'm impressed with your ability to weave the word postmetafractalflickrism into a blog comment. drop it into conversation with a librarian, and you'll earn yourself a whole bag of chocolate eclairs.

keep 'em coming!
